He doesn’t play for Mater Dei or Orange Lutheran. He didn’t make it on varsity until his junior year. But it’s time to start paying attention to senior first baseman Jake Bauers of Huntington Beach Marina. He has become one of the best hitters in Southern California.

Bauers is batting .577 with 41 hits, six home runs and seven doubles. He helped the Vikings sweep Fountain Valley last week, and they open the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Thursday at home against Norco.

He signed with Hawaii, but major-league scouts have been following him closely in recent weeks, and he’s expected to be drafted in the top five rounds next month.

Teams that have won the Division 1 playoffs had a player rise up in pressure situations. Bauers is certainly capable of doing just that.
