Bill Redell never loses his sense of humor.

On Saturday morning, the former Oaks Christian football coach was laying in his hospital bed with tubes in his nose and arm after 2 1/2 hours of surgery on Friday for a knee replacement.

A visitor asked if he could take a photo to show everyone that Redell was OK.

‘Let me cover up,’ he said.

Redell, who turned 72 on Wednesday, should be released from Valley Presbyterian Hospital by Monday and begin his rehabilitation. He was the football coach last season at Occidental College but stepped down. With a new knee, he’s certain to stay involved somewhere.

‘You should notice a significant difference,’ Redell said his doctor told him after surgery.

He’ll have two grandsons playing football in the fall. Daniel Redell, the son of former Crespi quarterback Ron Redell, will be a freshman at Oaks Christian. Bear Redell, the son of former Crespi center Billy Redell, will be a junior quarterback at Santa Ynez.

Redell is too young to step away from football altogether.

Stay tuned.
