Anaheim Servite has turned to one of its own, A.J. Gass, 37, to become its new football coach.

Gass, who was a standout linebacker for the Friars in the 1990s and served as an assistant coach to Troy Thomas, was named football coach on Thursday. He replaces Thomas, who resigned after eight years to return to his alma mater, Encino Crespi.

Thomas gave a glowing recommendation of Gass, calling him a great fit for the Friars.

‘I think he’s a great choice,’ Thomas said. ‘He’s an alumunus, a man of character. He loves the kids and they love him.’

Gass coached the defensive line for Servite, coached special teams and was dean of students. He played at Fresno State and in the Canadian Football League.

His challenge will be coaching against some veteran coaches in the Trinity League. He’ll take over a program that went 3-7 last season.
