Baseball: Santa Margarita gets sweep of Orange Lutheran

Santa Margarita is starting to make noise in the Trinity League, and that means the Eagles also could be a team to watch in the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

They completed a two-game sweep of second-place Orange Lutheran (16-5, 7-4) on Friday with a 3-2 victory. Griffin Canning threw six innings, striking out five and walking one. Austin Ponzi had two hits and two RBIs. He broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with an RBI single. Santa Margarita is 13-10 and 5-6.

Mater Dei (21-1, 11-0) won its 21st consecutive game, an 11-3 victory over St. John Bosco. Ryan McMahon had a three-run home run. Servite scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull out a 3-2 win over JSerra. Justin Stream’s RBI single in the eighth won it.

No. 2-ranked Fountain Valley (22-2, 11-1) suffered its first Sunset League defeat, losing to Los Alamitos, 10-3. Jake Nix threw a complete game. Gianni Castillo had three hits.

In the Marmonte League, Robert Stephan went four for four in Simi Valley’s 6-5 win over Newbury Park. Ricky Davis had three hits and three RBIs for Newbury Park. Blake Chiaramonte had two hits and two RBIs in Moorpark’s 9-2 win over Calabasas.

Thousand Oaks defeated Royal, 4-3, on a walk-off double by Ricky Sheehan. Agoura stayed in first place with a 6-0 win over Westlake. Andy Sondreaal struck out seven in a complete game. Bryce Fehmel had two hits and three RBIs. Tyler Cohen had a single, double and triple.

In the Mission League, Loyola stayed in first place with a 4-2 win over Alemany. The Cubs broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth. Quinn Brodey had two RBIs and Nathan Hadley picked up the save. Harvard-Westlake defeated Chaminade, 3-0, behind Conor Cuse, who threw a four-hitter. Jack Flaherty, Brian Ginsberg and Michael Vokulich each had two hits.

In the Golden League, Ty Boyles threw six no-hit innings as Quartz Hill defeated Knight, 7-1. In the Channel League, Santa Barbara defeated Buena, 6-1. Conner McManigal homered twice. In the Del Rey League, Gardena Serra defeated Bishop Montgomery, 10-1. Robert Hunt, Marcus Wilson and Tim Ravare each had two hits.

In the Foothill League, Luke Soroko threw a no-hitter as Valencia defeated Hart, 1-0. Colton Burns had a walk-off RBI double in the seventh. Jake Spurlin had a two-run double in West Ranch’s 5-2 win over Golden Valley. Cody Bennett struck out six in five innings of relief. Saugus defeated Canyon, 5-1. Rex Kemple hit a two-run home run and finished with four hits.

In a battle for first place in the Empire League, Elijah Skipps had two hits and two RBIs to lead Cypress past Yorba Linda, 6-3. Trevor Hall threw a complete game, walking none.

In the Southwestern League, Joven Afenir struck out eight in Vista Murrieta’s 4-2 win over Murrieta Valley.

In the Sunset League, Newport Harbor defeated Huntington Beach, 3-1, despite three hits by Marcus Mayorga.

Mario Losi had two doubles and two RBIs to help Anaheim Canyon defeat El Modena, 4-1, in the Century League.

In the Pacific League, Burbank defeated Glendale, 8-0. Harrison Hernandez had two hits and four RBIs. Crescenta Valley defeated Hoover, 11-1, in six innings. Brian Gadsby threw four shutout innings.
In the Baseline League, Alta Loma defeated Etiwanda, 7-6. Glendora defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 17-4. Eric Flores went five for five.

In the South Coast League, El Toro defeated Trabuco Hills, 6-5, in 10 innings on a bases loaded walk. Capistrano Valley defeated Mission Viejo, 4-3. In the Tri-Valley League, Oaks Christian defeated St. Bonaventure, 12-1.

Woodbridge defeated Beckman, 5-2, in eight innings. Blake Redman threw a no-hitter in Camarillo’s 1-0 win over Pacifica.

In the Frontier League, Malibu (20-3, 10-1) defeated Santa Paula, 9-4. Chris Falk had three hits.

In the East Valley League, Poly defeated Grant, 4-0. Salamon Salazar went four for four with two doubles. Jason Cisneros threw a no-hitter. Arleta defeated Monroe, 4-1, in eight innings. Chris Garcia threw a three-hitter.

In the Marine League, Banning defeated San Pedro, 12-9, in eight innings. The Pilots rallied from a 9-3 deficit. Julian Villegas had three hits. Mario Verduzco had a three-run triple in the seventh to tie the game.
