Baseball: Lakewood, El Toro win openers in Boras Classic [Video]

Top pitching performances from Andrew Mendoza of Lakewood and Chasen Ford of El Toro highlighted the opening games of the Boras Classic on Tuesday.

Mendoza twice struck out the side and finished with seven strikeouts and a six-hitter in Lakewood's 2-0 win over Anaheim Canyon at Mater Dei in a game that was played in one hour, 19 minutes. Austin McGeorge was the tough-luck loser for Canyon (10-2). There was just one walk in the game by McGeorge.

Jonathan Pasillas had a two-run single in the third for Lakewood (9-6), which will face Great Oak on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Mater Dei in a quarterfinal game.

Ford, headed to Yale, struck out 11, walked one and allowed four hits in El Toro's 8-1 win over Chaminade at JSerra. Phillip Steering went four for four.

Great Oak defeated Loyola, 2-1. Orlando Meza delivered a two-run single in the top of the fifth to wipe out a 1-0 deficit. Bill Wegman threw a complete game, striking out five. Quinn Brodey took the loss. He had an RBI double in the third.

El Toro will face Oaks Christian in Wednesday's 3 p.m. quarterfinal at JSerra. Cole Taylor, Jack Kruger and Harrison Hoff hit home runs in Oaks Christian's 10-3 win over Vista Murrieta. Hoff and Nathaniel Palace each had three hits. The Lions won without having to use ace pitcher Phil Bickford.
