Baseball: Jack Hartman has his final tuneup before facing Chatsworth

Senior left-hander Jack Hartman threw a complete game and improved to 8-1 in helping Reseda Cleveland defeat Granada Hills, 3-1, on Tuesday in a West Valley League game. Hartman gave up five hits. Reno Rankin had two hits and two RBIs.

Cleveland is 3-0 in league, and Hartman’s next pitching appearance will be a showdown game next week against Chatsworth.

Chatsworth received a two-hit shutout from Jason Karkenny in a 3-0 victory over Birmingham. Karkenny struck out three and walked one. Tyler Ryan had two hits, including a triple.

Taft knocked off defending City champion El Camino Real, 8-6, making the Conquistadores 0-3 in league play. Adam Cox had three hits, including a home run, and pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief.

In the Valley Mission League, San Fernando defeated Sylmar, 5-0. Armando Esparza threw a two-hitter, stirking out six. Rafael Salcedo, Jose Haros and Joseph Mier each had two hits.

In a nonleague game, Garfield defeated Arleta, 6-2.
