Baseball: Gahr, Orange Lutheran advance to National Classic semifinals

Cerritos Gahr and Orange Lutheran earned semifinal spots in the National Classic on Tuesday with quarterfinal victories.

Gahr scored all its runs in the first inning to hold off Huntington Beach, 3-2. Andrew Encinas threw six innings and Paul Versteeg got the save with a scoreless seventh. Gahr will play Cypress in Wednesday’s 4:30 p.m. semifinal at Cal State Fullerton. Cypress defeated El Dorado, 2-1. Kevin Lillicrop threw a four-hitter. David Fletcher had two hits.

Garett King threw the shutout in Orange Lutheran’s 11-0 win over Maryland Calvert Hill. Brad Rinehart had three RBIs and Matt Stumme contributed two hits and two RBIs.

Orange Lutheran will play Esperanza in the 7 p.m. semifinal at Fullerton. Esperanza defeated La Jolla Country Day, 12-4. Travis Wilson, Griffin Barnes and Harrison Pyatt had three hits apiece.
