Baseball: Corona Santiago rallies for 4-3 victory over Chatsworth

April 2, 2013 |  5:10 pm

Things were looking pretty bleak for Corona Santiago in its opening game of the Boras Classic on Tuesday at Mater Dei. The Sharks trailed Chatsworth, 3-0, going into the bottom of the sixth.

They loaded the bases with none out on singles by Kevin Morgan, Jeremy Goldenetz and Chance Sisco. Then two runs scored on an error and another scored to tie the game on a ground out.

In the bottom of the seventh, Santiago emerged with a 4-3 victory on a game-winning hit by Michael Darr off All-City pitcher Jason Karkenny with the bases loaded.

It was a tough loss for the Chancellors (10-6), who received three hits from sophomore Sam Shaikin, including a two-run single.

Santiago will play the winner of Mater Dei on Wednesday in a 6 p.m. quarterfinal at Mater Dei. Mater Dei, after falling behind, 5-0, defeated Hart, 6-5. Tyler Adkison had a two-run double for the Monarchs (11-1). Nick Valaika had a two-run double in the first inning for Hart.

Also, West Ranch rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Bishop Amat, 4-1. Cody Bennett threw a complete game, striking out six. Jordan Benty, JD Krauskopf and Kyle McGraw had RBIs in the sixth.

West Ranch will play JSerra on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at JSerra. JSerra defeated El Camino Real, 6-0. Quentin Longrie threw six shutout innings. Jake Pries had two hits.
