Baseball: Monty Plattner (8-0) keeps Fountain Valley rolling

Fountain Valley (22-1) might be the best team not named Santa Ana Mater Dei in Southern Section Division 1. The Barons got a one-hitter from Monty Plattner (8-0) on Wednesday to defeat Los Alamitos, 4-0, in a Sunset League game.

Also in the Sunset League, Andrew Arledge threw a four-hitter in Huntington Beach’s 1-0 win over Newport Harbor. Edison defeated Marina, 4-3.

In the Trinity League, Chris Mendoza had three hits and three RBIs to lead Santa Margarita past Orange Lutheran, 9-2. That gives Mater Dei a three-game lead over second-place Orange Lutheran.

In the Moore League, Lakewood defeated Long Beach Poly, 1-0. In the Hacienda League, Bonita got a complete game from Parker Merritt and a two-run home run from Justin Row in a 4-0 win over Los Altos.

Cody Maples, a senior pitcher, threw a no-hitter, striking out four and walking three, in San Clemente’s 5-0 nonleague victory over Tesoro.

In the Marmonte League, Sean Barry struck out 13 and allowed two hits in Moorpark’s 2-0 victory over Calabasas. He’s 9-1 and has 114 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings.

Matt Campbell struck out four and walked one in Simi Valley’s 3-0 win over Newbury Park. Agoura defeated Westlake, 5-2. Henry Baker struck out seven and Tyler Cohen got the final out with the bases loaded in the seventh. Thousand Oaks defeated Royal, 2-1, in nine innings.

In the Foothill League, Hart defeated Valencia, 4-3, in eight innings on a two-run home run by Austin Ross. It was Hart’s 14th one-run game this season and fifth in a row. The Indians (8-13, 4-6) are 7-7 in one-run games. Canyon rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Saugus, 6-4. West Ranch stayed tied for first place after an 8-1 win over Golden Valley. Jake Bird had a three-run triple and Tyler Woldanski had a two-run double.

In the Empire League, Cypress (17-6, 5-2) pulled into a tie for first place after a 2-1 win over Yorba Linda. Kevin Lillicrop struck out eight and allowed four hits. Steven Andrade had two hits and two RBIs. In the Century League, Anaheim Canyon (16-5, 8-4) suffered a 1-0 loss to El Modena when the winning run came home in the bottom of the eighth on a passed ball. Mario Losi limited El Modena to one hit. Nathan Kuchta threw a five-hitter for El Modena.

In the Baseline League, UCLA-bound Scott Burke struck out 10 and threw a two-hitter in Glendora’s 12-0 win over Rancho Cucamonga. DJ Peters had three hits and three RBIs. Josh Smith threw a complete game in Etiwanda’s 8-1 win over Alta Loma. Los Osos defeated Upland, 5-3.

In a battle for first place in the Golden League, Knight (16-3, 9-0) defeated Quartz Hill, 9-0.

In the Southwestern League, Hunter Tidwell and Tyler Wilson each had three hits and two RBIs in Vista Murrieta’s 8-3 win over Murrieta Valley.

In the East Valley League, Josue Monreno struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings as Sun Valley Poly defeated Grant, 4-0. Arleta defeated Monroe, 4-1. Andrew Cuevas had three hits. Verdugo Hills defeated Chavez, 6-5, in nine innings. Brandon Zavala hit for the cycle with with four hits.

In the Marine League, Banning improved to 5-0 with a 9-3 win over San Pedro. Geno Brockway struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings and Juan Gallardo had a home run, single and two RBIs.

In the Tri-Valley League, Oaks Christian scored two runs in the seventh to defeat St. Bonaventure, 11-10. Jack Kruger hit two home runs and finished with six RBIs.

Malibu improved to 19-3 with a 5-3 win over Santa Paula. Chase Lambert had two doubles and picked up his eighth save with four strikeouts in two innings.
