To win this week’s first-ever Boras Classic, one of the 16 teams will have to come through with not only lots of pitching but a little hitting and defense. There are no easy games in a tournament that’s supposed to produce the top team in Southern California to face its Northern California counterpart in a state-like championship game on April 13 at the University of Pacific.

Pleasant Grove has already won the Northern California bracket of the Boras Classic. It’s the same school that won the Division I state title in basketball.

The Southern California bracket feature a who’s who of elite teams, topped by No. 1-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei, which won last week’s National High School Invitational in North Carolina. The Monarchs might learn this week’s tournament is even more challenging.

What’s great to see is that JSerra and Mater Dei are working together. They’re the home sites for the games.

Tuesday’s opening games at JSerra include El Toro vs. Chaminade at 9 a.m., Oaks Christian vs. Vista Murrieta at noon, West Ranch vs. Bishop Amat at 3 p.m. and El Camino Real vs. JSerra at 6 p.m. At Mater Dei, it’s Canyon vs. Lakewood at 9 a.m., Great Oak vs. Loyola at noon, Chatsworth vs. Corona Santiago at 3 p.m. and Hart vs. Mater Dei at 6 p.m.

The championship game will be Friday at 6 p.m. at JSerra.
