Hold off on the coronation just yet of defending state sprint champion Khalfani Muhammad of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.

Muhammad is going to get some competition this spring, and one of those competitors is Elijah Mitchell of Eastvale Roosevelt.

He has the fastest 100 meters in the state, finishing in 10.63 seconds at an invitational at Vista Murrieta. He also ran the 200 in 21.45.

Like Muhammad, who’s headed to California to play football, Mitchell is a football player who signed with Nevada.

Of course, Muhammad is just loosening up for track season. By April when the Arcadia Invitational comes around, he should be ready to go real fast.

Among the state leaders, according to Prepcaltrack.com, are pole vaulter Joey Reeves of Arroyo Grande (16-0); long jumper Walter Jones of Redlands (23-2 1/2), and discus thrower Amir Patterson of Crespi (177-1).

Among girls, Claire Kieffer-Wright of South Pasadena has cleared 5-8 in the long jumpa and Kaitlyn Merritt of Santa Margarita has gone 13-1 in the pole vault.
