Former Carson and Garfield football Coach John Aguirre has been named the new commissioner of the Los Angeles City Section.

Aguirre, who has served as an assistant commissioner, will replace the retiring Barbara Fiege on July 1. He will have the responsibility of taking over a section that will no longer be financed by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The City Section is breaking away on July 1 and will get its money primarily from school dues, playoff revenue and corporate contributions.

‘I congratulate him on his selection,’ Fiege said. ‘I believe he is well prepared for the job ahead. He will move the section forward in this one-of-a-kind transition.’

Aguirre has been an assistant commissioner for seven years. He has worked in education for 33 years.

‘What a humbling experience to be selected,’ Aguirre said in a statement. ‘It is a job that comes with many challenges, and also an opportunity to serve the schools within the section and expand athletic opportunities for the youth of Los Angeles.’

Aguirre will help hire an assistant commissioner and a marketing director.
