Girls’ basketball: Corona Santiago takes 1AA crown

Jada Williams made two free throws with 2.8 seconds left to clinch Corona Santiago’s 70-65 victory over Etiwanda in a thrilling Southern Section Division 1AA championship game Friday night at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Chrishae Rowe had 25 points, Shiana Carrington had 20 and Paris Jones added eight for the third-seeded Sharks (29-2), who led 63-56 with 1:22 left before surviving a furious Etiwanda comeback in the final moments. The game was tied 49-49 with six minutes left.

Cherice Harris missed a game-tying three-pointer with six seconds remaining and Gaby Johnson missed the putback attempt, forcing the fifth-seeded Eagles (28-3) to foul Williams on the rebound. Amy Okonkwo had 14 points and 12 rebounds, McKynzie Fort had 13 points and Alyssa Anderson added 11 for Etiwanda, which stunned top-seeded and previously-undefeated Mater Dei 73-72 in the semifinals.

Etiwanda trailed 32-26 at halftime but took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter.
