Boys' basketball: Santa Monica wins 1A championship

_3023511Santa Monica has won the Southern Section Division 1A championship with a 66-56 upset over top-seeded El Toro at the Anaheim Convention Center.

On a night when top scorer Jordan Mathews made only four of 18 shots for 13 points, the second-seeded Vikings (26-6) turned to senior guards Trevis Jackson and Erron Vaughn, who combined for 27 points. Spencer Cramer had eight points and Chris Smith had six for the Ocean League champions.  

George Buaku scored 10 of his 12 points at the foul line and Sean Harman added 11 for the Chargers (27-7), who cut their deficit to 59-53 with 1:01 left but got no closer.
