Redondo has upset No. 1-seeded Westlake 67-63 in the Southern Section 2A championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The game was tied 52-52 with six minutes left but the second-seeded Sea Hawks (23-8) converted two steals into layups to take a seven-point lead. It is the third section title in four seasons for Redondo’s first-year coach Reggie Morris, who won the 5AA title at St. Bernard last season and the 1A crown at Leuzinger in 2010.

Derek Biale made seven of 12 field goals for 19 points and Ian Fox added 18 points and six assists for Redondo in a game that had seven ties and nine lead changes. The Sea Hawks led 33-27 at halftime.

‘Defense is our calling card--we win ugly,’ Morris said. ‘Sixty points was our magic number all season. We try to hold our opponents under 60 and we came close to that by trapping them, throwing in some zone and switching things up. They have great jump shooters but arenas are different than high school gyms and that might have played a factor.’

Grant Lozoya had 18 points and eight rebounds and Larry Bush added 18 points for the Warriors (26-5), who were outrebounded 41-36 and committed 17 turnovers. It was nevertheless a successful season for Westlake, which won its first Marmonte League title since 1996.

The Sea Hawks have reeled off 16 straight victories since a loss to Bishop Montgomery and will be contenders for the Division II state crown. Morris led St. Bernard to the state final in 2011.
