What a treat it was watching Stanley Johnson of Santa Ana Mater Dei do battle with Aaron Gordon of San Jose Mitty on Saturday night in Sacramento.

It was the two best basketball players in California going head to head.

They didn’t disappoint and showed why each will be playing the game for years to come.

Mater Dei won, 50-45, to capture its third consecutive state championship, this time in the Open Division.

Gordon, a senior, will be playing in the McDonald’s All American Game. Johnson will take a day’s rest on Sunday, then return to the gym on Monday to start preparing to try to win a fourth consecutive state title.
