Baseball: Austin McGeorge wins pitcher’s duel for Anaheim Canyon

In a Century League opener on Tuesday, Austin McGeorge of Anaheim Canyon matched Brandon Luper of Anaheim Esperanza pitch for pitch. But in the end, McGeorge and unbeaten Canyon defeated Esperanza, 1-0, in eight innings on an RBI single by Cole Garcia.

McGeorge threw all eight innings, striking out nine and walking none. Luper struck out seven and walked none in 7 1/3 innings. Canyon improved to 6-0 with its fourth one-run victory.

‘I’ve got a team that’s playing together and finding ways to win,’ Canyon Coach Joe Hoggatt said.

In a Moore League opener, Chris Castellanos and Long Beach Poly defeated Long Beach Wilson, 1-0, in eight innings. Castellanos struck out 11 and walked one. Peter Fierros had the game-winning hit.

In the Pacific Coast League, Beckman (8-1, 2-0) defeated Corona del Mar, 4-3, on an RBI double by Jake Hazard in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the Mission League, Harvard-Westlake (9-1, 2-1) defeated Crespi, 5-1. Jack Flaherty improved to 4-0, striking out six and walking none in six innings. Casey Rosenfeld, Ezra Steinberg and Alex Horowitz had RBI singles. Kevin Lewallyn struck out nine in Chaminade’s 2-0 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. Eddie Muhl allowed just one hit in defeat.

Dominic Smith struck out nine in five innings and contributed two hits in Gardena Serra’s 6-3 win over Santa Monica.

Angel Roman had three hits in Burbank’s 6-3 win over Arizona Ironwood Ridge.

Sierra Canyon improved to 8-1 after a 5-3 win over Buckley. Jake Fried and Brock Bell each had two RBIs. Jake Ramey walked none in a complete game. Reid Womack had three hits for Buckley.

Cory Peterson threw a complete game in Etiwanda’s 5-1 win over Yucaipa.

Damien defeated Claremont, 10-4, Los Osos defeated Glendora, 6-2.

Reseda Cleveland defeated Pasadena, 5-0. Jack Hartman struck out nine in six innings and added two hits and two RBIs. Birmingham defeated Beverly Hills, 5-0. Anthony Cardoza struck out eight and allowed three hits. Daniel Rivas had three hits and Justin Minor and Audello Camacho added two apiece.

Granada Hills advanced to the championship game of the Babe Herman tournament with a 4-0 win over Arcadia. Ryan McBride threw a three-hitter and Collin Dudley had two hits.

Oaks Christian swept a double from Garces, 10-2 and 10-4. Harrison Hoff and Riley Helland each had three hits in the first game. Cole Taylor had a three-run double in the second game and Austin Sreden hit a two-run home run. On the day, Helland was five for seven with three doubles.

Crescenta Valley defeated Cajon, 4-1. Jonny Psaltis threw five innings and drove in two runs. Bryan Wang got the save. Mira Costa swept a doubleheader from El Segundo, 5-4 and 3-0. Austin Henning had a walk-off double in the first game. Gordon Cardenas threw five shutout innings and Jack Webber went three for three in the second game.
