Girls' basketball: Etiwanda ends Mater Dei's 28-game win streak

February 27, 2013 |  8:55 pm

Etiwanda's girls' basketball team handed Santa Ana Mater Dei its first defeat of the season on Wednesday night in a Southern Section 1AA semifinal playoff game.

The Eagles defeated Mater Dei, 73-72, in overtime. Mater Dei had come in 28-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today.

Amy Okonkwo, a 6-foot-1 junior, scored 27 points for Etiwanda. Karlie Samuelson led Mater Dei with 24 points.

Like the Etiwanda boys' team that won in overtime on Tuesday night against Long Beach Poly, the Eagles kept their poise and earned a spot in Friday's championship game against Corona Santiago at 8:45 p.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center.
