What’s intriguing about the early rounds in the Southern Section basketball playoffs is the lack of upsets and how well the top seeds are holding on to their spots.

There’s only one division where more than one of the top four seeds has been eliminated. That’s 3AAA, where last week, No. 2 Sonora was beaten by Servite, 44-40, and No. 3 Hart was defeated by West Torrance, 64-55.

Those defeats could open the way for a deep run by No. 6 Royal out of the Marmonte League. The Highlanders have size with 6-foot-9 Scott Woods and a veteran point guard in Max McCoy.

One of the few other eliminated seeded teams was No. 4 Jurupa Valley in 3AA, which was beaten by Diamond Ranch, 53-52.

There’s going to be some exceptional quarterfinal games on Tuesday in 4AA, with No. 1 Bishop Montgomery at No. 8 Harvard-Westlake; No. 6 Windward R No. 5 La Verne Lutheran; No. 3 JSerra at No. 4 Gardena Serra and No. 2 Price at No. 7 Crespi.

I can’t wait for the cheers at the game between the two Serras: ‘We’re the real Serra.’
