Jimbo Lull is only a sophomore, but on the court he plays with the poise of a senior.

The 6-11 center had 20 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks and Rolling Hills Prep closed the game on a 17-2 run to capture the Southern Section Division 5A championship with a 50-36 victory over Shalhevet in the first of four finals Thursday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The top-seeded Huskies took an 8-0 lead but Shalhevet pulled to within 23-20 at halftime. After Joseph Fallas’ corner three-pointer gave Shalhevet a 34-33 lead, Aron Rudd answered with his own three-pointer to put the Huskies in front to stay, 36-33, at the end of the third quarter. The second-seeded Firehawks (24-2) did not score again until the final minute.

‘He was a real force under the basket,’ Rolling Hills Prep Coach Mark Fancher said of Lull. ‘He disrupted their flow on defense and drew double teams on offense, which left the other players open. He did it all.’

Rudd had 16 points and seven rebounds and Eric Ambrose added 10 points and six rebounds for Rolling Hills Prep (22-8). Fallas led the Firehawks with 22 points. Eitan Rothman, a 6’ 9’ senior, defended Lull under the rim and finished with six points, 11 rebounds and five blocks for Shalhevet, which suffered its first loss since December 15.
