Boys' basketball: Private vs. public schools

February 27, 2013 | 11:50 am

Gets your score cards out, because I know everyone has been keeping track of how many public schools and how many private schools have reached the 12 Southern Section championship games in boys' basketball.

As it stands, there will be seven champions from private schools and four from public schools. If Mater Dei wins in Division 1AA, that would make eight private school champions.

Private schools have won all 10 state championships in boys and girls for the last two years.

The addition of the Open Division this season is supposed to create more opportunities for public schools in the state playoffs. Don't hold your breath on that one.
