Southern Section rules don’t allow a second-place team from the same league to be placed in the same bracket as the first-place team, so that has created an oddity in the 4AA boys’ playoff pairings.

Top-seeded and unbeaten Torrance Bishop Montgomery from the Del Rey League was seeded No. 1, and there are top seeded teams in the Knights’ bracket other than No. 5 La Verne Lutheran.

The No. 2 seed, Price, the No. 3 seed, JSerra, and the No. 4 seed, Gardena Serra, are all in the bottom bracket. Serra is in the same league as Bishop Montgomery.

It means Bishop Montgomery can probably cruise to the semifinals before facing a competitive matchup. And even then, No. 6 Windward or No. 5 La Verne Lutheran would be the likely challenger. No. 8 Harvard-Westlake could face the Knights in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, in the bottom bracket, JSerra and Gardena Serra are likely to meet in the quarterfinals. Price could face Crespi in the quarterfinals.
