Boys’ basketball: Junior Robert Cartwright sparks Flintridge Prep

Junior guard Robert Cartwright took control in the third quarter, scoring 10 of his 20 points, to help No. 2-seeded Flintridge Prep turn a seven-point halftime advantage into a 69-48 victory over Avalon in a Southern Section 5AA playoff opener on Wednesday night.

Burbank Providence was beaten by Desert Christian, 72-66, despite 37 points from Christian Ware-Berry. Top-seeded Village Christian defeated Pacifica Christian, 85-41. Marsalis Johnson scored 31 points and had 17 rebounds. Bryan Alberts didn’t play under orders from his parents for an academic issue.

Santa Clara defeated Nuview Bridge, 66-31. Armon Momin had 14 points and DeAndre Jones 12.

In 3AAA, Siavash Yektafar of Beverly Hills scored 29 points in a 62-48 victory over Santa Barbara. Servite defeated Arroyo, 60-47. Calabasas received 17 points apiece from Jeremy Lieberman and Austin Smith in a 70-56 win over Rio Mesa. Compton defeated La Mirada, 74-52. Iziahiah Sweeney had 20 points. Royal defeated Citrus Valley, 67-33. Lewis Stallworth had 28 points in Hart’s 86-83 win over North Torrance.

In 3AA, No. 2 Damien defeated Los Amigos, 74-28. Jeremy Hemsley led Damien with 16 points. Jared Dizon had 14.

In 3A, top-seeded St. John Bosco defeated Buena Park, 78-33. Daniel Hamilton had 18 points, Isaac Hamilton had 16 points and Tyler Dorsey 10. The Braves will play at Ridgecrest Burroughs on Friday. Chaminade defeated Artesia, 84-30. Jaron Martin had 14 points. Jake Beck scored 15 points and Evan Crawford had 10 rebounds in St. Francis’ 56-34 win over Lompoc. No. 2 Oak Park defeated Monrovia, 78-29. J.D. Slajchert had 20 points.

In 4AA, top-seeded Bishop Montgomery is 27-0 after a 101-36 win over Whittier Christian. Lamond Murray Jr. finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds. No. 3 JSerra defeated Whitney, 82-35. Jordan Wilson had 19 points and Stefan Toskovic 17 in Windward’s 66-55 win over Ribet. Windward will face Oaks Chrsitian, which defeated San Marino, 74-32. Sierra Canyon defeated Big Bear, 66-57, and will face Gardena Serra in the second round.

Serra defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 56-44. Tavrion Dawson had 13 points and Ajon Efferson 10. Ryan Ducar and Cameron Glassen led Notre Dame with 11 points each.

No. 2 Price defeated Morningside, 75-45, with James Washington and Chance Murray scoring 18 points each. Harvard-Westlake defeated Templeton, 77-46. Dave Winfield Jr. scored 16 points. Freshman Max Heidegger had 19 points and senior London Perrantes added 17 points and 12 assists in Crespi’s 63-55 win over Compton Centennial. Crespi will play Maranatha in the second round matching Perrantes against Pepperdine-bound Jeremy Major. Maranatha defeated Costa Mesa, 55-47.

In 4A, No. 2-seeded Brentwood defeated Malibu, 72-45. Leland King had 26 points and Tra Holder 24. Campbell Hall defeated Bishop, 76-35. Aaron Holiday had 20 points. St. Anthony defeated St. Bernard, 95-58. Kyle Benton had 20 points and 15 rebounds.
