The second-round matchups on Tuesday night in the Southern Section 1AA playoffs are so good I’m going to try to predict the winners:

Mater Dei at Warren: Unless Stanley Johnson shows up sick and tired, the Monarchs will be cruising into the quarterfinals. The pick: Mater Dei.

Rancho Verde at Chino Hills: Stay until the final minute of this one. Chino Hills is playing really well. The pick: Chino Hills.

Rancho Cucamonga at Inglewood: Victor Joseph has emerged as a top junior guard for Rancho Cucamonga, which knocked off Etiwanda a couple weeks ago. Inglewood has a win over St. John Bosco. This could be the best game of the night. The pick: Rancho Cucamonga.

Mission Viejo at Orange Lutheran: Payton Banks vs. Evan Zeller. What a matchup. The pick: Mission Viejo.

Silverado at Corona Centennial: With Sedrick Barefield & Co. being young and unafraid of pressure, Centennial is a dangerous team. The pick: Centennial.

Great Oak at Etiwanda: Jordan McLaughlin is not going to let the Eagles lose any time soon. The pick: Etiwanda.

Pasadena at Loyola: If defensive stopper Mtume Armour of Loyola finds out what kind of gum Andre Spight chews, it could be trouble for the Bulldogs. The pick: Loyola.

Mayfair at Long Beach Poly: Roschon Prince is rising up in the playoffs. The pick: Long Beach Poly.
