La Verne Damien has hired former Bishop Amat Coach Mark Paredes as its football coach.

Paredes has been head coach at Riverside North for three years. He spent 18 years at Bishop Amat, where he worked with Damien’s principal, Merritt Hemenway.

‘I know he will do what it takes to have a successful football program,’ Paredes said Thursday.

Paredes lives in West Covina, which will cut down his commute.

And he’s looking forward to a return to the Catholic school environment, calling it ‘refreshing.’

He will replace Greg Gano, who resigned and is expected to become the coach at Tustin High after district approval.

Correction: An earlier version of this blog incorrectly spelled Mark Paredes’ last name.
