Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei has 19-16 lead after first quarter

Top-ranked Mater Dei has taken a 19-11 lead after the first quarter of its Trinity League showdown against host St. John Bosco. The gym is filled to capacity of more than 1,500.

St. John Bosco scored the first four points of the game, then Mater Dei scored 12 points in a row. The Monarchs’ defense was limiting St. John Bosco to one shot each time down, then getting the rebound.

Mater Dei opened up a 17-5 lead midway through the quarter. Stanley Johnson had five points. The Braves started applying more pressure on defense to cut their deficit. Mater Dei outrebounded the Braves, 13-7.
