There’s a new Open Division for the state basketball playoffs. The idea is to place the eight best Southern California teams together regardless of their section’s playoff division, then do the same in Northern California, with the regional winners meeting in a championship game in Sacramento.

But the current No. 1 team in Southern California, unbeaten Torrance Bishop Montgomery, doesn’t meet the criteria to be included in the Open Division.

So if the Knights are to play in the Open Division instead of their current Division IV placement for the state playoffs, they would have to apply to be in the Open Division.

Coach Doug Mitchell said, ‘I haven’t even thought about it. I won’t make that decision for quite awhile. We need to win a CIF championship to consider it an option.’
