In its last tough challenge before the City Section basketball playoffs begin, Woodland Hills El Camino Real held on for a 65-57 victory over Orange Lutheran on Saturday at the Fairfax State Preview Classic.

The Conquistadores (21-2) opened a 15-point second-half lead, saw the hustling Lancers close to within five points before prevailing. Julian Richardson and Michael Thomas finished with 17 points apiece.

When Thomas picked up his fourth foul in the fourth quarter with just over six minutes left and El Camino Real leading by 11, that’s when the Conquistadores suddenly looked lost. The Hawaii-bound Thomas was steady from start to finish.

Brian Beard had 11 points for Orange Lutheran, which didn’t have Payton Banks in the second half. He has been ill and tried his best in the first half.

Torrance Bishop Montgomery is 23-0 after a 79-34 victory over San Diego Lincoln. The Knights led, 28-2, after the first quarter and 57-4 at halftime. Running clock was used in the fourth quarter. Lamond Murray Jr. finished with 15 points. Ognjen Milkovic added 14 points.
