Dave Winfield Jr., a 6-foot-9 senior center who’s had continuing knee problems, made his long-awaited season debut for Studio City Harvard-Westlake in the MaxPreps tournament in Palm Springs last week, playing in three games.

Harvard-Westlake (9-3) has started to play much better just in time for its Mission League opener on Friday night against host Encino Crespi.

It’s a typical Greg Hilliard-coached Harvard-Westlake team that starts slow and develops chemistry. The standouts are junior forward Derick Newton and junior point guard Michael Sheng.

But there’s lots of other contributors, and the Wolverines’ win over Loyola in Palm Springs indicated the improvement being made just as league play is set to begin. And getting Winfield back to contribute as a rebounder and shot blocker will help.
