Boys’ basketball: 28 points, 20 rebounds for 7-footer Thomas Welsh

Desperately needing a win after two close Mission League losses earlier in the week, Los Angeles Loyola (14-4, 4-2) turned to 7-foot junior center Thomas Welsh, who responded with 28 points and 20 rebounds on Friday night to lift the Cubs past Alemany, 86-70.

Trey Mason had 18 points. Brandon Boyd led Alemany with 18. Crespi stayed in first place with a 57-49 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. London Perrantes had 18 points and eight assists. Chaminade defeated St. Francis, 63-42. Trevor Stanback scored 15 points and had 16 rebounds and 10 blocks. Jack Williams had 20 rebounds.

In the Trinity League, top-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei escaped with an 82-80 double-overtime victory over JSerra. Stanley Johnson had 24 points and Elijah Brown 19.

In the South Coast League, Evan Zeller scored 30 points and Max Redfield had 24 points in Mission Viejo’s 90-80 win over Tesoro.

In the Ocean League, Jordan Mathews scored 33 points in Santa Monica’s 67-50 win over Morningside.

In Missouri, St. John Bosco was beaten by Virginia Paul VI, 52-50, on a shot at the buzzer. Isaac Hamilton scored 19 points and Daniel Hamilton 12.

In the Alpha League, Brentwood defeated Paraclete, 76-73. Leland King scored 32 points and Tra Holder 26. Windward defeated Sierra Canyon, 50-44. Stefan Toskovic scored 14 points and Roy Hemsley 11.

In the battle for first place in the Baseline League, Etiwanda routed Rancho Cucamonga, 76-39. Jordan McLaughlin scored 21 points. Kenny Barnes and Sheldon Blackwell added 18 points apiece.

In the Sierra League, Chino Hills defeated Damien, 72-39. Bishop Mency scored 25 points and Mark Williams had 11.

In the Marmonte League, Thousand Oaks defeated Moorpark, 72-54. Tanner Fanjoy scored 26 points. Calabasas defeated Simi Valley, 73-52. Max Hoetzel had 14 points and Jeremy Lieberman 13. Calabasas made 16 three-pointers. Westlake defeated Agoura, 72-62. Grant Lozoya scored 23 points and Larry Bush 21. Royal defeated Newbury Park, 62-42. Scott Woods had 22 points.

In the Foothill League, West Ranch defeated Golden Valley, 82-50. Ako Kaluna had 26 points and 16 rebounds. Hart handed Valencia its first league loss, 73-54. Lewis Stallworth scored 23 points.

Dominguez defeated Downey, 64-60, in overtime. EJ Johnson had 17 points. In the Del Rey League Gardena Serra defeated Bishop Amat, 60-33. Jeremy Wright had 11 points. La Salle defeated St. Bernard, 73-55. Vance Jackson scored 23 points, had nine rebounds and seven steals.

St. Anthony defeated St. Genevieve, 66-59. Eric Cooper had 36 points.

Lawndale improved to 4-0 in the Pioneer League with a 58-45 win over South Torrance. Nathan McAnally and Will Newman contributed 15 points apiece.

In the Tri-Valley League, Oaks Christian defeated Bishop Diego, 75-47. Jackson Miller scored 20 points.
