Boys’ basketball: It’s a Centennial-Etiwanda rematch on Friday

Three weeks into the basketball season and Corona Centennial and Etiwanda are about to play for a second time. The two Southern Section 1AA powers each won their quarterfinal games of the Inland Empire Invitational on Thursday, setting up a Friday semifinal at Fontana Miller at 7:30 p.m.

Centennial (8-0) used its full-court pressing defense to come away with an 85-56 victory over Upland. Sophomore Sedrick Barefield scored 18 points, freshman Jordan Griffin scored 17 points and senior Sam Finley had 17 points.

Etiwanda (5-2), playing without injured guard Jordan McLauglin (sprained ankle), defeated Chino Hills, 69-56. Sheldon Blackwell, coming back from a groin injury, scored 20 points. Kenny Barnes added 16 points. Etiwanda and Centennial played on Nov. 30, and Centennial won, 76-67.

Rancho Cucamoga advanced to the semifinals with a 71-61 win over Miller and will play Silverado at 6 p.m. at Miller.

In Santa Maria, Pacific Hills knocked off Westchester, 67-62, in triple overtime. Jahmel Taylor scored 30 points. It was the second straight overtime loss for Westchester.

In Carmichael, La Verne Damien defeated Carmichael Jesuit, 52-48. Senior guard Jared Dizon scored 22 points and made four three-pointers.

Santa Monica defeated Peninsula, 74-62. Jordan Mathews scored 32 points.

University defeated Cleveland, 68-60. Arvis Greene had 21 points and Breamon Richard 19.

Mission Viejo improved to 9-0 with an 82-40 win over Irvine. Evan Zeller scored 23 points. Max Redfield had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
