Athletic Director Jan Hethcock said Tuesday that first-year Coach Jeff Woodruff will be back as head coach of Oaks Christian.

‘I was pleased,’ Hethcock said of Woodruff’s coaching performance.

Woodruff, a former college assistant, was hired to replace Bill Redell. Oaks Christian finished 8-3 and was beaten in the opening round of the Pac-5 Division playoffs by Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, the first time in school history the Lions didn’t make it past the first round.

‘Certainly, you want to go undefeated and we didn’t do that,’ Woodruff said. ‘We’d like to build our numbers up. We were in the low 40s practicing the last half of the season. If you can get less guys going both ways and get your numbers up, you have a lot better chance.’

Woodruff said he expects most of his assistant coaches to return. ‘No one has said anything to me about not coming back,’ he said.

The offense returns at least seven players who started games, led by quarterback Brandon Dawkins. The defense has nine players who started games returning.
