The best coach who’s never won a Southern Section football championship is Dave White of Huntington Beach Edison.

He’s in his 27th season. Three times the Chargers lost in upper-division finals, the last time in 2009, when it rained and rained at Angel Stadium and Servite won, 16-6.

Now Edison (12-1) gets another chance to win a title on Friday night against Villa Park in the Southwest Division championship game at Angel Stadium.

If Edison wins, the Chargers’ season might not be done. They could land in a a CIF Division II regional bowl game.

What’s clear is that White didn’t ask for his team or league to be moved from the Pac-5 to the Southwest. Edison still played its tough nonleague games against Mater Dei and Servite.

He’s always been a classy public-school coach giving his players a first-class high school sports experience to prepare them for the future.
