Football: Andy Moran makes impact at Eagle Rock

One of the surprise teams in the City Section this season is Eagle Rock, which went 7-3 in the regular season, won the Northern League championship and is seeded No. 2 in City Section Division II.
A big reason for Eagle Rock’s rise is that Coach Greg Pierce hired former L.A. Marshall Coach Andy Moran as an assistant coach to run the offense and also contribute wherever he can. And surprisingly, it’s worked out just fine.
‘He listens to my suggestions and whining,’ Moran said. ‘He’s been great. He allows me to do a lot of different things. I don’t think I could hire another head coach. We’ve almost killed each other a couple of times.’
Moran spent 10 years as head coach at Marshall, then lost his teaching job. Eagle Rock hired him as a teacher, and he said he’s very happy.
Eagle Rock has received strong play this season from junior defensive back Paul Gandara, who has seven interceptions, including two in last week’s Northern League championship game against Lincoln. Quarterback Joe McGuan also has been solid.
Eagle Rock faces Washington in a first-round playoff game on Friday.
