Football: St. John Bosco holds on for a 27-19 win
St. John Bosco has defeated Santa Ana Mater Dei 27-19 and moves into sole possession of first place in the Trinity League with two games left.
Mater Dei pulled to within the final margin with under two minutes remaining, but the Braves recovered an onside kick and clinched the game when Lonell Woodhouse gained five yards on 4th-and-1 at Mater Dei's 41 with 47 seconds left.
Monarchs star wide receiver Thomas Duarte sat out the second half with a right thigh contusion, but Nikolas Little picked up the slack with eight catches for 103 yards.
Darren Walker had 181 yards and a touchdown in 24 carries for St. John Bosco, which has not won a league title since 2002, before it joined the Trinity League.
Santa Margarita needed a field goal in the final minute to edge Orange Lutheran, 17-14, and Anaheim Servite beat San Juan Capistrano JSerra 28-0 for its first league win. St. John Bosco and Servite meet next week at Cerritos College.
