Palisades’ 29-28 upset victory over Fairfax on Friday has left the surprising Dolphins at 2-0 in the Western League and 4-3 overall.

Coach Perry Jones decided not to play for a tie after Taylor Mensik scored a touchdown with 29 seconds left. He went for the win, and Austin Applegate scored on a two-point conversion.

Who would have thought that Palisades might be the second-best team in the league behind Venice? Jones said Palisades, which uses a wishbone attack, made progress after losses to Santa Monica, Encino Crespi and Vista Murrieta. He said the tough schedule enabled his players to get better.

‘The kids have worked real hard,’ he said.

Palisades will play Venice on Oct. 26 to decide the league title.
