John Barnes, the football coach at Los Alamitos since 1979, will go for victory No. 300 on Thursday against Huntington Beach Marina at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

He’d become one of only four coaches in state history to have reached the 300-win mark. The others are Bob Ladouceur of Concord De La Salle, Marijon Ancich of Santa Fe Springs St. Paul and Herb Meyer of Oceanside.

The Orange County Football Book has him with a record of 299-98-10.

‘Life is good for me,’ he told the Long Beach Press-Telegram. ‘I’m doing exactly what I want to do. I have no regrets staying in one place for so long. I couldn’t be one of those coaches who move to one job after another in order to climb the pecking order. I think it’s been good for my family and good for the program. There’s a great sense of loyalty.’
