Boys' basketball: It's a 6 a.m. reveille at Alemany High [Video]

October 24, 2012 |  9:42 am

"Good morning," Coach Tray Meeks said to his players as he opened the door to the Alemany High gym on Wednesday at 5:45 a.m.

Sometimes practices have to take place at strange hours, because that's the only time the gym is available. And even though Alemany is the defending state Division III champion, hard work takes place when others are sleeping, right?

It's a different Warriors team. Three starters are back, but gone are Marqueze Coleman (Nevada) and Max Guercy (Rice). Don't worry about Alemany. The Warriors still look like the favorites to win the Mission League, led by 6-foot-5 junior Bear Henderson, underrated senior guard KJ Moffett and a not-so-secret weapon, 6-7 sophomore Bennie Boatwright, who shoots the ball with uncanny skill.

"I feel we're more talanted than we were last year," Meeks said.

Yes, the Warriors just might be more talented, but experience matters in the tough Mission League.

"We can't do anything but shoot for the stars," Meeks said.
