So much has changed since August among the Eastern League teams that when action begins on Friday night, there’s really no clear-cut favorite.

Garfield is 0-4 after playing a very tough nonleague schedule. South East has lost six starters because of their roles in an alleged hazing incident. South Gate has come out of nowhere to start the season 4-0. Roosevelt and Bell are 3-1.

League plays begins with Huntington Park at South Gate, South East at Jordan and Bell at Roosevelt.

I still think Garfield will be the team to beat. Remember, the Bulldogs prepare for league by challenging themselves in nonleague games, and facing the likes of St. Bonaventure, Edison, Dorsey and Venice has done just that.

South East still has quarterback Jonathan Santos, but he has lost one of his best receivers and the team is still trying to come to terms that its coach, Derwin Henderson, has been removed.

The winner of Roosevelt-Bell could be a prime challenger to Garfield.

And then there’s the surprise team, South Gate, which has made a major turnaround under former Roosevelt Coach Jose Casagran and has a red-hot quarterback in Eddie Flores, who has 11 touchdown passes.
