One of the most stunning moments of the 2011 football season came in the Southeast Division championship game, when Whittier La Serna gave up 84 points in an 84-21 loss to West Covina.

Coach Margarito Beltran put up a giant photo with the score to remind his players of the work needed to be done.

‘We have a little chip on our shoulders,’ he said.

On Friday night, La Serna improved to 4-0 with a 38-9 victory over Marmonte League power Westlake Village Westlake. Ryan Cardova and Tony Ceron had interceptions in the victory, and quarterback Frankie Palmer completed 14 of 19 passes for 190 yards.

La Serna returns 16 starters from the team that gave up 84 points. The Lancers are ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Division.

Beltran said his players learned plenty from last season’s final and use it as an incentive. So beware of the La Serna Lancers the rest of the way.
