Football: Elijah Asante and St. Paul are hanging tough

It wasn't a pleasant first two games for first-year Coach Elijah Asante of Santa Fe Springs St. Paul. The Swordsmen were routed by La Mirada and Santa Ana Mater Dei, causing lots of Asante's critics to wonder when he was going to quit.

Except Asante is usually at his best when people are circling and waiting for him to stumble.

On Friday night, St. Paul put it together and defeated La Habra, 34-20, with Kurt Scoby rushing for 201 yards and scoring three touchdowns.

The victory will give St. Paul a little breathing room but not much. After a bye this week, there are games against La Puente Bishop Amat and Anaheim Servite.
