L.A. Cathedral is interested in sponsoring a basketball team that would play simultaneously with its regular high school team but not be part of the CIF, Principal John Montgomery said Wednesday.

The only problem is it would be illegal under CIF rules, Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said. A school can’t have two separate teams, Simmons said.

It makes sense why first-year Coach William Middlebrooks would want to have two different teams. He has some transfers, including a 7-footer from Greece, who are ineligible to compete in the CIF this coming season. Another team would allow them to play immediately.

Montgomery said he wants to follow CIF rules and plans to discuss the idea with Southern Section officials.
