Ventura St. Bonaventure staved off a furious rally by Corona Centennial in the final minutes to win 40-35 in tonight’s nonleague showdown at Moorpark College.

Centennial pulled to within five points on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Robert Webber to Barry Ware with just 2:06 left, then recovered an onside kick. However, running back Austin Renken was tackled two yards short of a first down on 4th-and-five at the St. Bonaventure 45-yard line, turning the ball back over to the Seraphs.

Making his first varsity start, Webber threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score. In his second varsity start, St. Bonaventure quarterback Ricky Town passed for 340 yards and three touchdowns and also scored on a sneak.

This is the second year in a row that Centennial has lost its season opener against St. Bonaventure. Last fall, the Huskies led at halftime before falling 29-27 to suffer their first home defeat since 2009.
