Football: Prep player dies in Illinois after collapsing at practice

August 9, 2012 |  8:46 am

A 17-year-old high school football player in Spring Valley, Ill., died Wednesday after collapsing during the first day of football practice.

Daniel Lule of Hall High School was running conditioning drills, according to the LaSalle News Tribune. After collapsing, he was attended to by a trainer and an ambulance was called. CPR was performed. He was transported to a local hospital and died at 1:37 p.m.

In Southern California, football coaches are taking extra safety precautions because of the extreme heat that resulted in the Los Angeles County Health Office issuing a heat alert for Los Angeles County through Friday.

John Aguirre, a City Section assistant commissioner, said schools have been told that if the heat index is 100 to 104 degrees, practice must be rescheduled to a cooler time of the day. If the heat index is 105 and above, all practice will be canceled for the day.
