Last season, Santa Ana Mater Dei had the best freshman team in Southern California, going 10-0. Now a group of those players should be varsity contributors as sophomores beginning with Friday’s game against St. Paul.

Lineman Alex Losoya and receiver Ben Humphreys are two players to watch. Humphreys comes from a highly regarded sports family. His father, Brad, played football at Stanford, and his mother, Wendy, was a standout volleyball player at Stanford.

Add sophomore tight end Kyle Penniston, a transfer from Orange Lutheran, and it’s clear the Monarchs will have some quality young players to rely on.

Ten sophomores are listed on Mater Dei’s varsity roster.
