There was one game last week among the season openers that left many wondering what it meant. That was the 40-23 victory by unranked La Puente Bishop Amat over No. 3 Anaheim Servite.

The bottom line was Bishop Amat should have been given a lot more respect, because junior quarterback Koa Haynes is a better than previously known. He filled in last season as a sophomore, and Coach Steve Hagerty said the coaches knew what he was capable of doing.

Haynes completed 14 of 21 passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for a touchdown. He has two superior skill position players to work with in receiver Darren Andrews and running back Dionza Blue.

‘He managed the game well,’ Hagerty said. ‘After one game, we didn’t have any turnovers and threw the ball well to open guys. He’s a pretty athletic kid. His performance wasn’t a surprise to us, but we see him every day.’

As for Servite, it was the Friars’ first opening defeat since 2006, Coach Troy Thomas’ second season at Servite. The Friars were breaking in a new quarterback, and the secondary has been considered shaky all summer and fall.

Servite usually responds well to adversity, and the Friars will face another stiff test on Saturday against Rancho Cucamonga. If they can cut down on turnovers, they’ll perform much better.

‘I like the guys,’ Thomsas said. ‘They came back on Saturday with a good attitude. I think we can be a good team.’

Bishop Amat plays Chino Hills on Friday, so it’s another opportunity for the Lancers to move forward in preparation for a tough Serra League.
