Long Beach Poly and Gardena Serra have pulled out of scheduled games in Utah on Sept. 1 and will instead face each other in a nonleague game at Serra on Aug. 31.

Serra Athletic Director Ted Dunlap said safety and academic concerns forced the school to pull out after terms of the contract signed with organizers of the showcase were changed. The big issue involved transportation.

‘We tried to make it work,’ Dunlap said.

Poly and Serra were scheduled to play opponents in Sandy, Utah. Serra was going to play Salt Lake City East. Poly was scheduled to face Jordan High of Sandy.

Parents are going to have to scramble to cancel hotel and plane reservations.

Poly opens its season Friday against Carson. For a preview of Poly and other teams in the Long Beach area, here’s a link to Gazettes.com.
