Boys’ participation in high school drops in California

In the 2012 CIF sports participation survey, boys’ participation dropped by 4,066 to 448,971 and girls’ participation rose by 4,183 to 308,879.

Football remains the No. 1 participation sport in California with 103,088 participants for boys, followed by track and field (54,319), soccer (47,753), basketball (43,989) and baseball (43,236).

For girls, track and field is No. 1 with 43,727, followed by soccer (43,391) and volleyball (40,472).

Basketball had the largest increase, 4.1% for boys’ and girls’ for a combined 3,101 new participants.
