Down by 10 points at halftime, Santa Ana Mater Dei rallied for a 69-65 victory over Mission Hills Alemany in the championship game of the St. John Bosco tournament.

Elijah Brown was named tournament most valuable player. He scored 19 points, had seven rebounds and five assists in the final. Bear Henderson of Alemany finished with 23 points. Henderson also had an outstanding tournament. He scored 30 points in a semifinal victory over Fairfax.

It was an encouraging performance for both schools. Mater Dei is the defending state Division I champion and didn’t have Stanley Johnson this week. Brown, the son of Lakers Coach Mike Brown, took over the main scoring role.

Alemany is the defending state Division III champion and must replace Marqueze Coleman and Max Guercy. Brandon Boyd played well at the guard position.
