Track & Field: Weissenbach third in 800 at prelims

Amy Weissenbach of Studio City Harvard-Westlake, who set the national record in the 800 meters at last year’s state meet, won her heat in 2:09.87 at today’s prelims and clocked the third-fastest time out of 26 runners.

The Wolverines senior ran 2:05.55--the third fastest time in the nation this season--at last week’s Southern Section Masters Meet. Kody Atkins of Chico was the fastest qualifier at 2:08.54 and Chelsea Kruthers from San Juan Hills was second overall in 2:09.29.

The only other Southland runners to qualify for Saturday’s finals were senior Savannah Camacho of Templeton (fourth overall in 2:09.90) and Caitlin Turner of Thousand Oaks (fifth in 2:10.18).

Senior Kevin Gonzalez of Vista Murrieta was the fastest qualifier in the boys 800 at 1:51.90. Senior Dragan Simic of Irvine Woodbridge (1:52.75) and senior Edgar Cobian from Riverside La Sierra (1:52.87) also advanced to the finals.
